Using Social Media In Your Job Search – Facebook

It’s no secret that the internet, and more recently social media, have completely changed what we view as ‘normal’, and how we go about typical tasks in day to day life. One of the main areas that the internet and social media has impacted on in recent years is the job search. Finding a job has never been easier with so many new options at our fingertips, but in order to make the most of these new tools you first need to understand how they can benefit you in your job hunt.

Your Job Search and Facebook

Although other social media platforms such as LinkedIn are well known in the professional communities as job search tools, Facebook isn’t always the first place you might turn. But just like other social networks, Facebook has its own unique tools that can contribute making your search easier, faster and overall more worthwhile.

Here are some of the main ways you can make the most out of Facebook in your job search:

‘Like’ The Companies In Your Industry

It may be that there are specific companies you have in your sights already as a potential employer, or you may just feel a career move is on the cards but don’t yet know of any companies hiring or that you would like to work your way into.

Either way, ‘liking’ the pages of various companies that influential in your chosen industry is a great place to start on Facebook. Once you hit the ‘Like’ button on the company’s page, you will then receive updates on their activities in the same way you see updates from friends and family you have on Facebook. This will allow you to learn more about the company themselves, the industry as the company are likely to share insights and opinions, and even learn about job opportunities as many companies now share openings on Facebook to gather interest.

Use Job Hunting Apps

Facebook is well known for its unique app centre, often because of the constantly annoying invitations to play games from friends! But the apps on Facebook aren’t just games, there are many professional focused apps that can help with your career move.

Monster’s BeKnown app is a great place to start, and BranchOut is a useful tool for networking with potential employers and ex colleagues and friends who could help in your job search.

Join Facebook Groups

There are groups on Facebook for just about anything you can think of, so it goes without saying there are hundreds of groups just for job posts and tips in Ireland alone!

Joining some of these groups, particularly ones that are specifically for job hunters in your location or tailored to suit those looking for jobs in your specific profession, will help you to not only discover opportunities in your area but also learn more about the job search process and how to get a job.

The groups are usually open to anyone and you can post your questions, answer others and discuss topics, or just sit back and read everyone else’s conversations and learn something from them.

In our next article in this series, we will be looking at how to use Google Plus in your job search.
