Your Job Search and Google+

Google+ is not the most well known of the main social networks, and is therefore often overlooked as a job search tool. However, it is extremely popular among the business communities, making it one of the best social networks to find hidden gems when it comes to your job search!

Here are some of the main ways you can make the most out of Google+ in your job search:

Group Influential Connections Using ‘Circles’

A unique feature of Google+ is ‘Circles’, which are the groups in which you add people who you are connecting with. Much like Twitter, you can connect with anyone and their posts will appear in your main feed. Separating connections by industry or influence can allow you to make the most of your search as well as targeting your own messages to the right people at the right time.

Engage With Connections

Once you make connections and create Circles, you can then send out messages specifically to one Circle at a time. You can post engaging messages to industry influencers that will hopefully spark discussion and get you noticed by them. And you could questions about the job hunting process or about progressing in your career to a circle that contains only people interested in answering that type of question.

It is also important that you put yourself out there, and watch your main news feed for posts by influencers that you can then make comments on. Don’t make comments just for the sake of it though, just post well thought out comments that actually offer some value to the conversation and people will notice you and value your opinion.

Join Communities

Communities are similar to groups on LinkedIn and Facebook. Their purpose is to be a place where discussions can be had on particular topics, and there are specific groups that are tailored for job hunters in particular. There are communities where people share career advice and you can ask questions/post your own thoughts, communities where job listings will be posted by companies interested in hiring, and often communities for job seekers with a specific skill set or industry in mind.
