Is There Really Such a Thing As ‘Career Happiness’?

Career happiness; we all chase it but very few of us actually can say we experience it. So is career happiness just a pipedream? Or is there a secret to being happy and successful in a career?

It’s Personal

Whether or not we feel happy in our current job can be boiled down to one key ingredient that is completely unique to everyone; personality.

Your own personality traits are what define you. They are the reason you chose to like one thing and dislike another. So it makes sense that to have job satisfaction, the role needs to cater to your personality, work well with your strengths and not put too much strain on your weaknesses.

If you are naturally a good communicator and tend to flourish in social situations, then a career that allows you to lead and work with a team of people as a manager or senior team member is likely to give you more satisfaction. Whereas if you work better when left to your own devices, a role that allows you to work alone or as part of a smaller group would be best suited to you.

Are You A Natural?

Ever found you have a natural talent for something and enjoy doing it? Knowing the skills you have and enjoy using is another factor in feeling happy in your job.

You don’t necessarily have to have a natural flair for something to get a job that involves it, the main thing to focus on here is the enjoyment and the rest will fall into place. Skills and knowledge can be learnt through career training, but enjoyment goes a long way when it comes to developing and utilising a skill.

Identifying the skills you enjoy is simple. Just think of your next shift at your current job; what parts of it do you most look forward to? It can also help to sit down with a friend and chat about your roles and responsibilities. Ask your friend to look out for times when you seem most engaged and passionate about what you are discussing. These are strong indicators of the type of skills you should be looking out for when considering future job opportunities.

Getting The Right Balance

It’s an obvious one, but career happiness can be affected immensely by the balance of work and personal life.

Working over 40 hours a week and/or working unsociable hours and shift patterns can really wear a person down. No matter how much you may enjoy aspects of the job, if you are not getting enough time to spend with family and socialise with friends then you aren’t likely to find career happiness.

The working hours and the shift times, expectations and pressures of the job need to be counteracted with a good amount of personal time that is spent doing things you enjoy with people you love. If your current position doesn’t allow you to do that on a regular basis then you may want to consider your future career options.

It’s Never Too Late

Too many people use the ‘it’s too late’ excuse when it comes to being stuck in a job they hate. But it’s just that; an excuse! It is never too late to progress in your current career or even start from fresh on a brand new path.
