The hours are sociable (working 9-5 Monday to Friday), the role is exciting and challenging and the salary/benefits offered make it a worthwhile progression for admin staff looking for a more exciting role.
So what exactly does a Medical Secretary/PA do?
Medical secretaries and personal assistants are the main admin support for the medical consultant and/or general practice. Responsibilities of the role include:
Depending on where you chose to work as a medical secretary, you may have to deal with queries about a range of different ailments. For those working in a GP medical surgery, you will be asked about a varying range of conditions. Those working in a hospital will usually be placed on a departmental reception so the queries will be more localised to one area such as cardiology or paediatrics.
As a Medical Secretary, you will be required to deal with patients and family members who are upset/stressed about their illness or loved one’s condition. You will be expected to think on your feet and deal with sensitive situations calmly and responsibly.
If your job title is Medical Personal Assistant, you may be required to support a director or executive personally. This will involve handling their diary and booking meetings and appointments, drafting agendas for meetings, taking meeting minutes and organising travel/accommodation.
You may also be responsible for managing a team of secretaries in a GP surgery, making sure they have everything they need to complete their work, including documents, stationary and access to office equipment.
Medical Secretaries and Personal Assistants must have excellent secretarial and administrative skills to begin with. Some employers may require an appropriate level of qualification be gained.
It is also important that you have a good knowledge of medical terminology as you will need to understand and deal with medical terms on a daily basis. Again, a qualification may be required as evidence of this.
