Ciara is a Legal Secretary in a busy practice in North County Dublin. Previously she worked in the child care sector. Her day starts at 9.am every day and finishes at 5.30. There are 4 solicitors in the practice and 3 Legal Secretaries. The practice deals mainly in Personal Injury, Family Law and Conveyancing. One of the solicitors deals mainly with the Family Law cases. It is a very busy practice and is growing. Team work is key to the success of the practice. The work load is very diverse and is spread across the Solicitors and the Admin staff. Ciara’s day starts with collecting and sorting the post. While she carries outwork as requested by any of the 3 solicitors she handles the calls, diary management and Dictaphone for one solicitor specifically.
The days are extremely busy but very varied and interesting. She spends quite a bit of time drafting Legal Documents. This requires getting the details from the clients, forwarding it to the solicitor who puts in to the legal format which is then typed up. With three solicitors in the office it can get very hectic. Ciara may be expected to answer the phone type up letters and deal with new clients all at the same time. Her favourite part of the job is dealing with new clients and scheduled clients in particular as this enables her to get more insight to the legal aspects of the job. However having just completed the Legal Executive Diploma she is looking forward to getting more involved in this side of the practice. While doing the Legal Executive Diploma she applied for and was offered an internship to work alongside a Judge in City Hall in Philladelphia. Before commencing her career as a Legal Secretary Ciara studied the Legal Secretary Diploma maintains she would not be as good at her job if she didn’t have excellent typing skills, advanced Microsoft word and Dictaphone typing.
