If you’re considering a career move to an admin-based role and want to know more about what it will entail, keep reading!
Our past student, Gabriella, gained her Secretarial Diploma with us and now works as a receptionist for Ireland’s world renowned chocolate company in North Dublin. She talks us through daily life in her new role.
Gabriella’s day begins at 9am and finishes at 5:30pm, Monday to Friday. As the receptionist, her main responsibilities involve processing online orders from around the world, handling visitor centre bookings (a very busy attraction) and processing payments for the company’s various on and offline products/services. The phone never stops ringing, and it is Gabriella’s job to handle all incoming calls, whether they be queries or complaints.
Naturally there is a large amount of admin work involved in processing all this, but this is balanced out by regular opportunities to deal with key contacts when it comes to arranging events and competitions, so the role is often varied.
She loves the client facing aspects of the job, being able to deal with the key contacts and build relationships. She also loves the Monday – Friday aspect of the work after many years of shift work.
One of the main challenges faced by Gabriella is dealing with angry customers and complaints, however she does feel more confident now that she has the skills to correctly deal with them.
Having excellent Microsoft skills, which she gained as part of her Secretarial Diploma, has enabled her to take on the extra responsibilities effortlessly. The skills Gabriella learnt in the Effective Business Communication ensure that she knows the correct format and vocabulary for handling letters of complaints.
