There are no two ways around it, really; redundancy is horrible. The uncertainty causes untold stress and worry, but it doesn't necessarily mean your career is over.
Many people bounce back from it to prosper as strongly as ever. But what it does do is force you to re-evaluate things and maybe look at the bigger picture.
So, if the worst does happen, here are five things you can do to make sure it's not the end of your journey.
You have rights as an employee under the redundancy process, so find out what they are. Get to know exactly what will happen and when, whether there is any consultation process, any redundancy pay and whether your company will provide any support to help you find a new role.
You've likely been in the job a fair while, and the landscape shifts dramatically with time. Learn your value in your chosen field, and find out what skills employers in that field value. A little research can go a long way.
Don't underestimate this step! Your CV is the biggest marketing tool you have, so make the most of it. Make sure it's formatted properly and professionally, and is easy to read. Highlight the skills you've found out are most important (if you have them - don't lie!) and update it with the skills you learned from your previous role.
Once your CV is sorted, use it! Apply for as many relevant jobs as possible, get your LikedIn profile in order and get as many recommendations as you can. Networking with recruitment consultants can lead to your dream opportunity.
It'll be the final hurdle, so make sure you don't fall at it! Research some common interview questions and practice how you'd answer them. The more you practice, the better you'll become - it's common sense! If needed, refresh your wardrobe and prepare to get back in the game.
