With advancements in technology and changing expectations of legal clients evolving, so has the legal secretary and other legal adminstration roles. Although the core focus of the legal secretary and admin roles will remain centred around production of key documentation, there is now more responsibility on legal admin staff. In particular, legal secretaries now regularly manage client projects and are expected to have an understanding of advancing technology.
Voice recognition software, smartphones and tablets, laptops, email, and wireless office hardware have all evolved and the roles require the use of these new technologies on a daily basis.
Remote working is also a key change, with lawyers and their secretaries/assistants being expected to work from any environment, even when they’re on their travels. Enabled by mobile and cloud technology, anyone can now collaborate on folders and documents without being connected to a fixed office network, making working much more flexible.
Document production and filing is still a core aspect of the admin roles, however digital technology now enables this to be done digitally. Therefore, digital copies of files are created and often filed away on a shared computer network or using cloud technology to allow remote access.
Many of the core skills remain the same, including Microsoft Office software, typing and meeting minute taking.
Other key skills include audio transcription, business document production and an basic understanding of Irish Law is a must.
Excellent customer service skills and good overall presentation are also vital, as much more of the role for a legal secretary now involves dealing with clients both face to face and over the phone/emails.
