Fiona Masterson, legal secretary and Pitman Training Swords student, has been shortlisted for the Pitman Training Ireland Student of the Year award.
A total of 14 finalists will be looked at by the judges, with the winner receiving €1,000 cash prize and attending a special lunch and presentation to celebrate their award.
Fiona completed the Advanced Legal Secretary Diploma at Pitman Training Swords. Before completing her training, Fiona had secured a part time position with Liam Fitzgerald Solicitors, Lusk, thanks to skills and knowledge she had gained. She has since gone on to add mediation training to her CV.
“Since starting the course I found that my confidence was coming back and that I was thoroughly enjoying learning all over again,” said Fiona. “I am a single Mum with two teenagers, I gave up work when they were small and decided to stay at home, both children are now in secondary school.”
“I had worked from home for 14 years doing childcare and educating myself with FETAC level 5 + 6 child development. I felt now was the time to go back to work and so decided to develop my computer and administration skills.”
Choosing to return to office work and completely change career is a courageous step, and one that impressed the judges enough to help Fiona reach the shortlist.
