The number one goal for most people in their career is progression. That’s why it’s so important to set smaller, manageable goals along the way to help us to take steps on the ladder and improve as we move on in our career.
But some goals feel much easier to achieve than others and we can find ourselves hung up on a certain area, stopping us from progressing. That doesn’t have to be the case. Here’s our simple guide to achieving your career goals and getting the progression you want and deserve:
1. Set more specific goals
One of the main reasons for people not achieving their goals is because the goal is too vague or non-committal. Your goals need to be clear and specific if you want to achieve them. Having a specific milestone in mind will help you to not only know how to achieve it, but also stay motivated along the way.
2. Don’t just set goals, act on them!
We’re all guilty of it. Whether it’s New Year’s Resolutions or just a new day when you feel motivated to do something new, we all start with the best intentions but they soon dwindle. Don’t just make a list of goals you want to achieve and then let it get filed away, never to be seen again.
Create actionable goals, with realistic deadlines and plans on how you will achieve them in that time. Regularly take action to keep yourself motivated along the way, whether it’s signing up to a new course or checking in with a career advisor.
3. Regularly evaluate progress
Having a plan for achieving your goals helps you to know what needs to be done and by when. Regularly reviewing where you are at with the plan will help to keep you on track and motivate you to reach your goal sooner.
4. Be optimistic but also realistic
Yes, dream big, but also remember that the more realistic your goals the better chance you have of achieving them. If your main career goal is out of reach now, that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve it. It just means that you need to set yourself interim career goals that will help you to progress towards the main goal. For example, if you want to become a manager of a 250-strong team but haven’t yet managed a five-strong team, you’ll need to take some steps to grow as a manager before you’re ready for the end goal.
5. No-one’s perfect, focus on always improving
Many people are good at something, whether it comes naturally to them or they’ve had to work hard to become good at it. But no-one is ever perfect, and that’s why you should always strive to improve. The most successful people are those that always strive to be better, even in areas they already believe themselves to be good at.
6. Have determination on your side
If you’re going to commit to a long-term career goal, or even to some of those shorter-term milestones, you have to be determined. There will be times along the way when you want to quit or find things are more difficult than you expected, but staying motivated is the key to achieving all goals, big and small.
