Have you ever applied for a job that you thought you would be great at, but never heard back about an interview? A common mistake people make when applying for jobs is not communicating their abilities properly in their application. It’s likely that at some point in your life you’ve missed out on a job that would have been perfect for you because you’ve undersold yourself and your application or CV has simply been overlooked.
But not anymore. Our career advisors have gathered their tips on how to get your application to the top of the pile and show you are the perfect candidate for the position:
Take a good look at the job advert that you’re applying for. Go through it with a fine-tooth comb and pick out all the keywords and phrases relating to the candidate requirements. Ensure that your application or CV matches all these requirements. If there are gaps where the two don’t match, consider why that is. Do you have the required skills but aren’t communicating them in your application? Or are there skills that you are simply missing and need to consider some training in before you apply for the role?
Once you’ve covered off all the skills required, use this to now look at your experience and make sure that the relevant aspects of it are made clear. Where your experience from a previous role or even another industry are transferable, make reference to what you did in this situation and how that might look in a scenario relating to the role you’re applying for.
In many cases, if you’re looking to progress to a new role that’s above your current level then it’s likely you’ll meet the majority of, but not all the requirements. That’s understandable as you haven’t worked at this higher level yet, and moving up is a personal development journey where you hope to learn. But you still need to sell yourself to the employer or recruiter to show why you are worthy of the role despite not meeting all the criteria.
First of all, if there are any gaps that can be quickly and easily bridged, then do so. This could be in the form of an online training course or by asking a colleague for some support in developing a particular skillset.
It’s also important to highlight the skills that can be transferred and developed during the role. For example, if you’re going for an account manager role but haven’t ever done this before, draw on any past customer-facing experience or client relationship management experience that you might have as this can easily be transferred and fine-tuned as part of the new role.
Use voluntary and extracurricular work as a selling point. For example, if you’re wanting to work for a charity or non-profit organisation, do some voluntary work for a charity that you can then add to your CV to show you’re keen.
