How to land your dream job in 4 weeks



If the January blues are all too real for you, and you go to bed every Sunday evening dreading that Monday alarm, then you’re in the wrong job.

While no job is perfect and we all have our down days when things get a bit stressful, overall you should enjoy your job. You spend the majority of your time at work, so you deserve to get satisfaction and enjoyment from that time!

It’s time to take control of your career and get yourself the job you want in just one month. That may seem like a bold claim, but if you read on you’ll find that it simply takes work and positivity to make it happen.

Week 1 – Self-confidence is key

The starting point for any job search or career change is always with yourself. YOU are what has held you back previously from going for a job you want and deserve. Believe in your own abilities and be confident in what you’re selling – if you’re confident in it then an employer has reason to be!

Dust off your CV and just remind yourself what you’re working with. What skills and experience do you have that sets you apart and makes you right for the role you want to go for? Every individual has value to an employer because of the skills, knowledge and personality traits that they can bring to the job.

If you’re not sure you have a skill that your new job requires, or don’t feel confident in it yet, then it’s time to learn! Showing a proactive approach to gaining new skills and sharpening existing ones will go a long way with any potential employer.

And the key thing throughout it all – you must stay positive, because that is what will drive you forward to achieve your goals.

Week 2 – Compare yourself to the ‘ideal candidate’

The second week of this process is where you need to start pushing forward. You’ve restored confidence in yourself and discovered what your strengths and weaknesses are, now it’s time to start considering if they match up with that your potential employer wants.

If you’re considering a job that requires qualifications you don’t have, then no you aren’t going to get it in 4 weeks. However, if your heart is set on that job then you could consider gaining a diploma in as little as 12 weeks (with dedication and hard work), so don’t write it off.  

If you don’t require new qualifications for the job, then you’re still on track for your four week plan! It’s time to start comparing the job specification to your own CV. What experience and skills make you the right person for this role? Make sure that shows in your CV by linking back to the job spec with key words and phrases. This helps the recruiter or hiring manager make instant connections and clearly see what you can bring to the role.

It's also very important to be honest with yourself and on your CV. If you’re not really right for the role, then don’t apply because it will only set you back if you don’t get it. Consider what your strengths are and what you actually enjoy doing in relation to those, and try to choose roles that compliment that.

Week 3 – Time for the interview

If everything is going to plan, by the third week you should have sent in your CV or application for your chosen roles, and have received some call backs about interviews.

During the interview, dare to be different. You want to make a positive and lasting impression, and separate yourself from the other candidates. And above all just be yourself and try to relax into the interview. Remind yourself of what you went over during week 1 – what do you have to offer? What skills and experience make you a great candidate? Self-confidence goes a long way in interviews, so make sure you go in with your head held high and make eye contact, firmly shake hands and speak with self-belief about what you have to offer.

Week 4 – Clean up your digital footprint

It’s the final week, and while you’re waiting for the call back after what felt like a successful interview, you might think you can relax? Not a chance! What the employer is likely to be doing right now is checking up on your social media accounts and getting to know more about you before deciding to offer you the job.

It’s vital that you spend the next week making sure everything you post on social media (and have done in the past) reflects the person you want your potential future employer to see. Make sure you have a LinkedIn profile and that it is up to date, as this will be one of the first places they’ll look as it’s a professional network.

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will be their next stop. If you don’t want your personal life to be seen then set your account to private, or if you want to let them in then just trawl through and make sure nothing stands out to you as ‘damning’ in the eyes of an employer.

And while they’re doing it, why not do the same? Connect with and get to know the people who were on your interview panel and peers who work in the company you’re applying for to get a glimpse into what life will be like working there. You never know, these would be your future colleagues!
