How to give a great second job interview


Congratulations! You’ve got through the first interview stage for a new job and they want to see more from you. It’s a great feeling, but it can also be pretty daunting. How do you impress a second-time around?

The good news is, by making it to the second interview you’ve definitely shown you have what it takes and tick all the right boxes for the role. Now it’s more about showing why you, over the other shortlist candidates that have also ticked those boxes, are the best choice.

This time it’s personal

Whereas the first interview is about whittling the shortlist down and is more focused on the role itself and checking you have the skills on paper, the second interview is more about you personally and if you’re the right fit for the job and the company.

The employer will have noted all your strengths and personal traits, but they’ll have also noted your weaknesses, and that’s what you need to prepare for. This second interview will be about addressing your weaknesses and how you will overcome them in order to do a great job.

Do your homework

Every interviewer is different. Some will offer plenty of information of what they expect from you up front, and may even ask you to prepare an assignment, presentation or essay ahead of the day. Others might prefer to keep it close their chest and will give you a set amount of time during the interview to complete a task or series or questions under pressure.

Whichever way the interviewer chooses to do it, you should approach it the same and be well prepared. Do your research on the company, the industry, and everything that could come up in relation to the day to day of the role.

Use your first interview advantage

A second interview puts you in a great position, because this time around you aren’t going in blind. You have the previous experience of the first interview, so you have at least some insight into who the people are on the panel, the company itself, the role and the first impressions are out of the way. They already like you and just want to get to know more about you and your abilities. 

Think positive

While they will be looking to discuss your weaknesses, you’ll need to consider how everything can be turned into a positive. Also, reinforce the positives from the first interview. What can you bring to the role that will take it further and have a real impact on the business.

And the power of a positive attitude can also go a long way. Be enthusiastic and make eye contact, smile and show you’re genuinely passionate about being part of the company and about taking on this role. That will help you to connect with the interviewers on a human level and reinforce why your personality is a great fit for their company culture.

Prepare your USPs

Your USPs (unique selling points) are what will help you to stand out from the other shortlisted candidates. What can you personally bring to the role and the business that will make an impact above any other? A good way to put this across is by considering the challenges you might face in the role and how your own unique personality, experience and skillset will help to overcome them.
