5 Alternatives To Further Education That Employers Love

Leaving school and don’t fancy college? Or are you leaving college and don’t want to have to go to university? Or are you graduating university and don’t want to do a masters but don’t want to jump straight into the job market without a buffer?

The Government, parents, teachers, they all make it seem like there is no other way to go than further education, and that our careers won’t be able to progress without Leaving Certificates, Degrees, Masters, etc. But the truth is, that many employers will consider, and in many cases prefer, a candidate who has an alternative and/or equivalent qualification and training.

So if you have your heart set on detouring from education, take a look at these 5 alternatives that employers will leap for joy to see on your CV:

 1. Career Training: Like distance learning, career training courses can be done in your own time and at your own pace, but they are much more practical. They focus much less on theory and study, and give you the skills and knowledge to progress in a specific job role, e.g. the Legal Secretary course would lead to a career as a secretary for a legal firm. They are loved by employers because they certify that you already have the training and skills to start the job immediately.

 2. Apprenticeships: You can start to earn a wage and get hands on training in a real working environment; giving you that first step in your career and helping you learn valuable skills. And there is often a guaranteed job at the end of it! If they can’t offer a guaranteed job, you still have the proven skills and experience to boost your CV in your chosen career.

3. School leaver schemes: Many companies offer specially designed schemes for people who are leaving school and want to skip education to get a head start in their career. Some of the top companies in the country offer these schemes, offering priceless work experience in the company’s ranks. Often the company will offer you some sort of position at the end of it, and if they can’t then it is still a valuable experience to have on your CV e.g. Lidl, Bank of Ireland.

4. Go abroad: More and more young people are seizing the chance to work abroad while they can. It looks great on your CV, and gives you the chance to experience different cultures and learn about the world in the process.

5. Distance learning: If your chosen career path requires you to possess a specific qualification, such as a degree or masters in a particular subject, but you don’t want to go back to the rigid timetable of education, then distance learning could be the alternative for you. Designed to fit around any lifestyle, distance learning can help you achieve a range of qualifications without having to attend college/university. You study in your own time while still receiving the same level of support, just as and when you want it.
