How To Get You The Career- Part 3

How To Get You The Career You Always Dreamed Of – Part 3

No matter where you are in life, whether you are a fresh faced young adult just out of school or a 50 something who has always dreamed of bigger and better things, there is no time like the present to get started on your own journey to success. In this 3 part series we will take you through the checklist for making your own fate and getting to where you want to be in your career. To read part 1, click here and to read part 2, click here

Face It, You Can’t Have Everything

Despite the picture that is often painted by Sex In The City and similar programs that make us all think we can work a highly successful job while having a perfect love life, family life, social life, health routine, still be perfectly pampered and fit it all without even breaking a sweat, it’s just not true.

In reality, sacrifices must be made. You need to have a realistic view of the road to success and how hard you will have to work and how high you want to climb. You must take into consideration, if you are young and unattached at the moment then you may have all the time in the world to devote to your career, but consider later in life when partners and children and other life events start to come along, you need to know how much you are willing to sacrifice both in your career and for your career.

If you are already at that stage in life, married, had kids, etc. you need to consider the amount of time you can devote to furthering your career, and again how much impact this will have on your current life. Having the right balance between life and your career will always mean compromising, but only you can decide how much of a compromise you make, and if it’s worthwhile.

Be Ready To Do More Than You Bargained For

No matter how much we plan ahead and prepare ourselves for the career path, it won’t always work out that way, and more often than not it’s a lot harder and takes more of your time than originally anticipated.

Going back to the mention of compromising, you may have to think about how you can devote even more time than you planned to setting the wheels in motion for furthering your career, especially if you have a partner that is equally as career driven, and children and other responsibilities to take into account.

There comes a time when you might need to do things you previously said you would never do. Women especially, find it hard to hire help such as a nanny, as they are dead set on not letting anyone else ‘bring up their children’. But the reality is, if you want to further your career, you have to get some help with the kids.

Don’t Try To Be A Lone Hero

It may be your career, but remember you can’t get anywhere alone. Although it is important to say no and stand your ground regarding your opinions, it is also key to have tact and grace. You don’t want to make enemies, especially not early on, as the people you work with at the moment could later become the people who work for you, and a team against their leader will not go in your favour.

The team who work for you need to respect you and believe in the same goals and values as you, as they are the cornerstone of any successful organisation. Demanding respect isn’t about being a harsh manager or being above them, it’s about working with them and building meaningful relationships with them.

Acknowledge the opinions and thoughts of your team, and encourage them to share them. As one person, you are only human, and no matter how hard you try you will not excel at every aspect, won’t think of every view point and idea. That is why having good communications with your team is essential, as working together you can all succeed, but working alone you will fail.

When building your team, consider your weaknesses (don’t say you don’t have any, everyone does!) and hire someone who is strong where you aren’t and can take on the tasks that you don’t excel at or enjoy. That is what your team are there for, to support you, so let them.

I hope you found part 3 of this 3 part series enlightening and motivational. Remember, no matter where you are in life, there is no time like the present to get started on your career path! Take a look at some of our training courses and qualifications to help you get a step up in chosen career.
