Sinead who previously worked in the health & beauty industry now works as a Leagl Secretary in a very busy practice in North Dublin. There is one solicitor in the practice and 6 legal secretaries. The work is spread across the team but one secretary is assigned to look after conveyancing only. This practice handles everything from civil litigation cases to family law, conveyancing to licensing. Every day is busy and no two days are the same. A lot of the work in the practice involves attending court on an almost daily basis. As there is only one solicitor in the practice and as he is required to be in the office as much as possible he briefs barristers to attend on his behalf as is feasible. The practice works with at least seven barristers. The great thing about this for Sinead is that she often gets to go to court with them to ensure they have all necessary paperwork. She also prepare the Briefs.
One of the most important parts of her job is meeting new and existing clients. She really enjoys this as it usually involves getting the clients instructions and proceeding with getting all the relevant legal documents and procedures in train. Now that she has completed the Legal Executive Diploma and is awaiting her results she hopes to get more involved in clients cases in the future.
On memorable moment in her career to date was when she got lost in the Four Courts and couldn’t find the court she was supposed to be in. The barrister was waiting on paperwork!.
She loves her work and feels that working in a small practice ensures she get tons of experience in different areas. She also feels that she would be lost without her legal secretary training particularly Microsoft word excel and outlook.
